Major American History

Compromise of 1850- This compromise met every ones requests and satistfied them for a while. They thought that this would solve the slavery problem and also keep the union together, but they were sadly mistaken. There were five laws to the compromise.1) California would become it's own free state.2) The inhabitants living in New Mexico and Utah were able to choose if they wanted to be a free or slave state.3) In Washington D.C., the home to the biggest slave trade, the citizens were not permitted to carry out any act of trading slaves, but slavery was still allowed.4) Texas had to give up New Mexico for $10 million.5) The implication of the Fugitive Slave Act. Which stated that all U.S. citizens were obliged to return any fugitive slaves to their owner and without a jury.
Kansas- Nebraska Act.- The opening of Kansas would be totally contradicting the Missouri Compromise. Now slavery would be brought into the north. This was an invitation to war. 1,200 immigrants came from New England and were equip with weapons. The election was sabotaged. Many southerners crossed the border and voted for pro-slavery. Out of 600 only 20 were legal residents, but pro-slavery one the election. Then the "Bogus laws" were implied. Saying that anyone who helped a fugitive slave would spend ten years in hard labor. Then Kansas was voted a free state by the people who didn't like slavery because it brought to many black people into their country and because the plantations were taking away from home investments. They were not entirely in the best interest for the slaves, but at least now the slaves were free. Then conflict arose and 55 people died in the "Bloody Kansas" confrontation.

Abraham Lincon- Lincon first lost to Douglas, but didn't give up. He composed a speech and publicised it in New York, which became very popular and well known. Lincon was ambitious and had to win over the republican state Illinois in order to win the election. Lincon succeeded in winning Illinois because of his new nick name "the rail splitter" because when he was younger he used to make fences. One month after Lincon was in the white house the Civil War began.
