News Paper Article

June ?, 1865
What’s left of america
The devastation of this war is unimaginable. There are 364,000 fatalities from the North, where as the South suffered 260,000 casualties. Yes indeed, it has been a bloody war. The war has destroyed two thirds of the South’s shipping industry, numerous plantations, and one third of the live stock. The country is shockingly dilapidated. Roads, bridges, factories, ports, and buildings lie in ruins. The war has brought devastation to many homes as well. Widows weep, children cry, houses are bare, and families are now left homeless and coping with poverty. Property value has gone down 70% in the South. Will America ever recover from such devastation?
Like President Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan for Reconstruction, President Johnson’s Presidential Reconstruction Plan pardons the southerners who promise to join the Union and abide by its laws. It also permits each state to hold a constitutional convention. Unlike Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan, Johnson’s plan states that, with the promise to refrain from succession, abolish slavery, and pay back the Confederate dept, states could then hold elections to reunite with the Union.
While the war is a major devastation, it also brings victory for the slaves. They are no longer under the wrath of slave traders or slave owners, they are finally free! This drastic victory will take some adjusting for plantation owners, as well as the new free men. Some of the previous slaves are searching for family members that have been sold at a different location, while others are searching for jobs. But they’re not the only ones. Many poor, white families are also looking for jobs. But they might have more of a chance, for 90% of the previous slaves are illiterate. Therefore, many will return to their previous owners, while others will keep hunting for a new job.
Now all we can do is wait in anticipation to see how this all unfolds. Hopefully with a full recovery, America will be able to, once again, rejoice as a united country.

Terms

Johnson’s reconstruction plan: 1) It forgave the southerners who swore they would be an honest Union citizen. 2) It allowed each state to hold a constitutional convention. 3) States had to be against succession, abolish slavery, and pay back the Confederate debt. 4) Then they could hold elections to join the Union again.
Black Codes: These codes gave restrictions to the freedmen. Such as curfews, vagrancy laws, one year labor contracts and land restrictions that stated that freedmen could only rent a home in rural areas.
The 14th amendment stated that all men were equal; therefore Johnson couldn’t enforce the Black Codes.
The 15th amendment stated that all U.S. citizens were allowed to vote.
Radical Reconstruction Act divided the South into five parts which were government owned by the North. It also ordered southern states to create and elect a new state constitution. Of which, had to include African American men. They also temporarily restricted anyone who supported the Confederacy from participating in the election. It required that the south treat everyone as equals and to abide by the 14th amendment.
Carpetbaggers were men who wanted some quick money or power. Southerners gave them this nickname because they were often greedy men who came to profit off of the Southern misery.
Scalawag was a name given to white southern republicans which meant “scrawny cattle.” Most of them were poor.

The Pioneers to Freedom

Fredrick Douglasss contributed to freeing the slaves by being the first colored man to be elected as vice president. By doing this he actually had a voice, and because he was vice president maybe people would start to listen. This was a revolutionary event because now a colored person was actually important and vital to the political system. He was part of the authority.

Harriet Tubman was known as "The Moses of Her People." She was a pioneer for the slaves and helped them escape through the underground railroad. This was a major contribution and a revolutionary act because she was taking matters into her own hands. She is very successful herself because she survived escaping slavery. She was also very brave by risking her life several times to help the slaves by fighting in the Civil War, and also by helping them escape in the underground railroad system.

William Lloyd Garrison contributed to freeing the slaves by spreading the news thought his news paper "The Liberator." This helped because now he was giving the people the understanding of the intensity of slavery and expanding their knowledge to the cruelty that they were provoking.

Major American History

Compromise of 1850- This compromise met every ones requests and satistfied them for a while. They thought that this would solve the slavery problem and also keep the union together, but they were sadly mistaken. There were five laws to the compromise.1) California would become it's own free state.2) The inhabitants living in New Mexico and Utah were able to choose if they wanted to be a free or slave state.3) In Washington D.C., the home to the biggest slave trade, the citizens were not permitted to carry out any act of trading slaves, but slavery was still allowed.4) Texas had to give up New Mexico for $10 million.5) The implication of the Fugitive Slave Act. Which stated that all U.S. citizens were obliged to return any fugitive slaves to their owner and without a jury.
Kansas- Nebraska Act.- The opening of Kansas would be totally contradicting the Missouri Compromise. Now slavery would be brought into the north. This was an invitation to war. 1,200 immigrants came from New England and were equip with weapons. The election was sabotaged. Many southerners crossed the border and voted for pro-slavery. Out of 600 only 20 were legal residents, but pro-slavery one the election. Then the "Bogus laws" were implied. Saying that anyone who helped a fugitive slave would spend ten years in hard labor. Then Kansas was voted a free state by the people who didn't like slavery because it brought to many black people into their country and because the plantations were taking away from home investments. They were not entirely in the best interest for the slaves, but at least now the slaves were free. Then conflict arose and 55 people died in the "Bloody Kansas" confrontation.

Abraham Lincon- Lincon first lost to Douglas, but didn't give up. He composed a speech and publicised it in New York, which became very popular and well known. Lincon was ambitious and had to win over the republican state Illinois in order to win the election. Lincon succeeded in winning Illinois because of his new nick name "the rail splitter" because when he was younger he used to make fences. One month after Lincon was in the white house the Civil War began.

Morocco's Potential Increasing Trade

Ahmet Ciger (president of MARFIED) gave a report on his way home to Casablanca on November 16, 2009. He said that the custom duties that are placed on the trade between Turkey and Morocco are unreasonably outrageous! If Morocco simply lowers it's custom duties then it will be more successful and involved with the trade between the rest of the world.
Turkey's trade with Morocco has damaged Turkey because of the high custom duties. Turkey would like to keep helping Morocco, but they would also like to benefit from it.
At the meetings that took place between 62 Turkish businessmen and 414 Moroccan businessmen, they agreed that they would build an 180,000 unit housing plan to clean up the streets and take care of the lower class citizens in Morocco. Morocco is looking at natural resources to fix the energy shortage and they are investing $9 billion for firms who want to invest in solar energy. Turkey can now invest in Morocco's renewable energy sector.

Why Move to New York?

Why Move to New York?

Economically: It is a big city, therefore you will probably get good deals and live comfortably. It is also a very materialistic city, therefore I would assume that they are economically stable.

Socially: New York is home to many movie stars, and you are more likely to run into them if you are living in their home town. Also, New York is the city that never sleeps, and it is always bustling with things to do.

Politics: New York is a Democratic state, and I happen to be a Democrat myself. I like to be around people that have the same political views as I do. All the more reason to live there. :)

Religion: I do not currently have a religion, and I've heard that people in New York are pretty accepting of that.

Arts: The art programs in New York are outstanding! It is the state that is home to Broadway! One of the most famous theaters in the world!

Technology: Since New York is one of the most materialistic states there is, it is always updating it's technology. I would like to live somewhere where I can always count on them to upgrade their technology when the opportunity arises.

five most important principals in declaration of independance and american constitution

Natural rights:
Natural rights are the rights of human nature, the key things nessesary for human development. These rights are applicable to the growth of humans as a whole. I choose this right as the first, and most important because without these rights we would stunt our development as a human nation.

Rights of Self Determanation:

This is the right to freedom of speech, and the freedom to have a choice in deciding the governments authority. I find this one of the important rights because we the people are a community and we work together to form a working and cooperating nation. That means including everyones opinion and voice.

Right to Revolution:

This means that there is a right to overthrow a government if it fails to forfill its given duties. If we are expected to grow and prosper then we need to be able to depend on our government to work and complete their duties to the best of their ability.
Popular soverginty:
This is when the government works for the people. This is nessesary because it's a government's role to look after and provide for their people. So it is expected that they work for the people.
Social contract:
This is when the people give up a portion of their freedom in order to protect their natural rights. I think this is the least important because we have fought wars for our freedom, and I don't think that any of it should go to waist.
